CHAPTER ONE
T
he Bus stopped once in a while, some people got off, and
more came on, but we stayed on. And so it was all the way; I
felt sick.
After we got off the bus in Mandeville, we walked for what seemed like
forever. Then we got a ride to a place called Knockpatrick, and after
that, more walking. All the walking and rough riding made me very
sore, so I started crying.
We took another type of transportation at a place called Newport, then
to Berryhill. I am not sure about the locations, I just remember the
names.
There, we stayed for a few weeks or could be months. That’s where I
met Uncle This and Aunty That, and cousins from everywhere.
One Aunty I remember well was Aunt Lue. She liked me a lot. She
would pick me up often, and kiss me on the cheek. They were all
focused on me —especially the children. They liked the way I sounded.
Whenever I say something, they would say to me, “Say it again; Say it
again.”
