CHAPTER TWO
M
y very early memories are of my mom and I living
together somewhere—I don’t recall if there were any
other family members around. I was about four or five
years old when I was told that we were going to the country to visit
with family. I was super excited; I couldn’t contain myself.
We were up early one morning to catch a bus, and it was so packed we
barely got a seat. There were frequent stops along the way. Sometimes
I thought it was going to turn over when it was turning a corner. It made
me sick to my stomach, I wanted to throw up.
We got off this thing after traveling for hours and hours because it
started smoking. Then we waited around for some more hours. After
that, we got back on and started all over again, making our way home.
Our stop was in Mandeville —that was where everyone actually came
off the Bus. Then we went on something else to Newport, then
Berryhill. After a few days there, we travelled to Rosehill. We walked
some more with my hurting feet and back.
Finally, we turned into a path leading to a house. There I met a man
who was introduced to me as my stepfather, and I also met a young boy
who was my half-brother, but there were no other little girls around.
