WINNING AT PAYMENT
HISTORY
THE VERY FIRST thing many people need to tackle is improving their
payment history. Poor payment history happens when you have credit
cards, loans, or other bills that you have paid late or not at all. Any
type of creditor including doctors and hospitals, universities and
student loan companies, and many others can report you to credit
bureaus in a way that harms your credit score if you don’t pay them.
Any of them can. But not all of them do. That’s one aspect of credit
strategy.
Obviously, if you had a ton of money you wouldn’t be having prob-
lems with payment history in the first place. This can make tackling
this problem particularly daunting, because it’s not like you’re not
paying simply because you don’t feel like it. If you could magically
produce enough money to pay all of these bills, you would have done
it already.
So what we’re going to talk about here is how to strategize to pay
the bills which are hurting you most first. Eventually, we will want to
pay all of them; but the more high-impact bills we take care of, the
easier it will become to take care of the rest. We’ll consider factors like:
