SHAUNA’S STAND–UP

But then I thought of one real joke.
“And also, one thing—I told my mom I wanted to be a stand-up

comedian. She said, ‘Well, you’d better start by standing up to clean

          your room.’”
For some reason, no one laughed. I actually thought it was a good

joke, though. I looked at the class and even the teacher, hoping they
would at least clap. But they stared at me like they were bored with my

          introduction.
I gulped, feeling embarrassed. “Uh, that’s… that’s the end of my

          introduction.”

That’s when the class clapped and laughed. Wait… were they
waiting for me to say ‘the end’ before they could laugh?

Mrs. Colleen smiled at me and said, “Well done, Shauna. That was
          a good introduction and joke.”

I went back to my seat feeling so humiliated that they didn’t laugh
earlier—but surprised that my introduction was actually good.
