darts that the enemy sends but also over the flaming missiles (see
Amplified translation of this verse). Through her ever-deepening
relationship with the Lord, the Shulamite has become mighty in faith
and able to win the major battles of the mind. That is why these shields
are the shields of warriors—she has overcome significant obstacles in
her life.
Similarly, if we are going to live in hope and rest in these tumultuous
days, greater faith in God is essential. The Passion Translation also
notes that she is now filled with great inner strength. She is grounded,
rooted, and secure in God’s covenantal love, likened to a fortress of
David. We know that David was the strongest warrior in the Bible, so
this is indeed a remarkable accolade.
In addition, she is now bearing the aroma of Christ and exuding His
beautiful fragrance:
“Your virtues and grace cause a thousand famous soldiers to surrender
to your beauty.”
As I looked at this line, I was reminded that our battles in life are not
with flesh and blood. We do not wage war with carnal weapons. When
we war in the opposing spirit to hatred, dissension, pride, and strife—
and instead use the weapon of love and humility—we will see
strongholds tumble and stubborn hearts submit to Christ, because Love
NEVER fails.
