MAY
Warm Season Turf: Bermuda and Zoysia
Mowing: Warm season grasses are now thriving and active. Regular mowing should now be in full swing, about every 7-10 days. It is okay to cut a little lower than usual as the lawn greens up. Be sure to raise your mower blade about every 3rd mowing to allow the lawn to grow and thicken. Your mowing height should be around the height of 3”. Never cut more than 1/3 of your grass blade on each cutting.
Watering: In ideal conditions, your lawn needs 2” of precipitation during the growing season per week. It is best to have less frequent, heavy soakings. This can come from rainfall or other means of irrigation. Do NOT overwater. This can be more detrimental than of lack of precipitation.
Aerate: Aerating your warm season grass is a great cultural practice. Golf courses do it many times over the course of the summer. May is a great month to aerate you Bermuda or Zoysia lawn. Aeration removes cores of soil from the ground surface to relieve compaction and allow air, water, and nutrients to get below the ground to allow your roots to grow and expand. This allows for a thicker, healthier stand of turf.
