Quick Facts
● Shark finning is the practice by
which sharks are captured and
their fins cut off; their bodies are
either discarded back into the
sea, often while they are still
alive, or taken to dock to be
moved into the shark meat trade.
● Every year, an estimated 100
million sharks are killed globally.
● Approximately 73 million of
those sharks are killed to be sent
into the shark fin trade.
● Shark finning is driven by the
demand for shark fin soup,
which is a traditional Chinese
delicacy that acts as a symbol of
social status.
● Shark meat contains dangerously
high levels of mercury, which is
toxic to the human body.
