Keep in mind that the “experts” were predicting twice the wind speed and nearly three times the surge.
Based on Orion’s direction, I decided to stay.
An 8-foot surge would destroy our car, but a 3-foot surge would not be a problem. 100 mph winds might do irreparable damage to our 105-year- old wood structure home – the oldest on the key. It might also collapse around us putting us in grave personal danger.
Do I trust my intuition or do I trust the “experts”? This is a question I had been asking myself for the last six years. I opted to trust my intuition and hunker down.
Our three grown children, brother, in-laws and all of our grandchildren except one, demanded that we leave. All were listening to reports from different parts of our country – most predicting dire results.
I held my ground until Saturday night when my wife Karen said, “I’m taking our two pets (Baby and Tinkerbell) and heading north. You can come or stay, it’s your choice.”
So Orion came at me from another direction:
“Go, you have no choice.”
That said, had we stayed, here’s what happened:
“50 mph with gusts to 72 mph, a 2-foot to 3-foot’ surge, and three days and three hours without power.”
For many, this might sound unbelievable. For many of the people I profiled in the book, however, it was not only believable but a routine way to make decisions.
At any rate, we left.
Starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday night, we drove all night to stay a few days with our son and his family outside of Atlanta. The good news was that we were so late leaving that there was zero traffic.
We set out to return on Monday morning. We were worried about the damage and wanted to get back as soon as possible.
