We faced another somewhat risky choice because Irma was coming right up I-75, our route south. Her eye wall was coming right over Valdosta, Georgia as we headed south towards Valdosta. She was supposed to arrive at 2 p.m. on Monday and we were going through there at the same time.
Once again, I asked Orion: how dangerous will it be? The answer, “No problem – 40 mph winds.” And that’s what we experienced.
Then we faced another problem. As we travelled south, we didn’t see any signs advertising gasoline. We had filled up before leaving Atlanta, but one tank of fuel wouldn’t get us home.
Once again: “Orion, will we be able to get gas on the way home?”
The answer:
“When you see an electric sign advertising fuel prices, stop, no matter how long it takes.”
We had gone about 150 miles passing by every exit south of Atlanta without an electric sign with fuel prices in sight.
Then we saw a Love’s sign showing the prices. We got off the exit and got in a line of about 100 cars. It was well managed, taking us about 30 minutes to get to the pumps and fill up.
The police kept people in line and a Love’s employee told us which pump to go to. Love’s had several fuel tankers there. They must have brought them in anticipating the problem.
As we travel from now on, if there’s a Loves on the route, that’s where we’ll stop.
As we left Loves, we saw that the line was then backed up all the way to the interstate with a long line at both north and south interstate exits. We didn’t see another lighted sign on the trip south.
As I contemplated this experience I once again experienced the enormous power of inner direction.
