MAKING DECISIONS IN WAR TIMES
Lieutenant General James C. King, U.S. Army, retired, spent his career both in war and peace – as a company commander in Vietnam and later as one of the nations’ highest ranking military and national intelligence leaders.
“My belief in Jesus Christ and family are paramount in my life. The titles I most cherish are husband, father of three and grandfather to ten. After these, I was a soldier.”
In General King’s typical fashion, this says it all.
He has used his intuitive abilities when in harm’s way both personally and for his soldiers.
General King is a devout Mormon and credits his leadership and decision making ability to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
His advice:
“Do the best that you can and then turn to God for the solution.”
He prayed every day, generally all day, when difficult command decisions were needed.
I had the honor of serving on the Utah State University Research Foundation Board of Trustees with General King. It is not difficult to understand how he rose to the ranks of Lieutenant General. Nor was it difficult to understand how, after retiring from the military, he was able to found and sell two companies, both valued at more than $200 million.
Jim commands respect while at the same time conveying warmth – an unusual combination.
He commands respect, not only because of his physical or career stature, but because of his clear thinking and decision making. When faced with difficult board of trustee decisions, he led the way towards hearing all sides of an argument and then synthesizing them into a clear question or decision.
