“I was assigned to a combat assistance brigade to support an Army of Vietnam Infantry Division. I was company commander and we were to train and help their people.
“I’d listen to the brigade commander meeting with the Vietnamese generals and they would listen to what the intelligence was and make military plans to go do it.
“But, it just didn’t seem to make sense to me. Over the course of a couple of months I felt I was losing far too many people. We were getting bloodied.
“I knew in the back of my mind that the plan was not working. I thought how I would react if I were doing it my way.
“I don’t know what it was, but I could see what was happening in front of me and make a decision.
“Sometimes many of the decisions I made in moving my soldiers or getting us out of a deep fire fight came without thinking. I was just instructed by God to do things that seemed to work.
“The soldiers began to like me and even my U.S. and Vietnamese counterparts began to trust my judgment.
“That started the basis for me, not for disobeying orders, but for trying not to lead my people into what was not in the interest of their health, safety, morale or welfare.”
Jim’s way to look at intuition...
“You get the gift of the Holy Ghost that becomes a revelator. And it’s the power to convey and reveal a truth to the soul with an absolute finality. It’s a witness, it’s a teacher, it’s a comforter, it speaks peace to the heart.
“If you’re humble or meek - able to not let your ego get in the way – able to listen. That second comforter is given to us when we accept the Church of Jesus Christ the Latter-day Saints.”
