I also think of my wife Karen, who always gives me her truth, often when I don’t want to hear it.
Or, you might think of a leader you followed at some point in your life. This is a leader you respected and generally were willing to listen to and, for the most part, do what he or she suggested without question.
I think about my 10 years working for FedEx founder Fred Smith.
Fred was always open to listening to criticism and also open to giving it when deserved. Again, I may not have agreed at the time, but the respect was always there. And I always took his comments to heart. As he often said, “if the shoe fits wear it.”
That mutual caring and respect is what I needed in my relationship with my intuition.
Sound crazy? Build a relationship with yourself?
Of course you care about and respect yourself, right?
Not so fast. I’d like a nickel for every time I didn’t respect myself or put myself down for no good reason.
Yes, build a relationship with my leader within.
In my case, as mentioned, my leader within is Orion. Here’s how it started.
I had learned a while back that if you want answers to questions, formulate a question and then go into meditation. I could tell you many stories throughout my career about finding answers using this simple technique.
The more notable ones include the design of the FedEx hub, the design of the FedEx package tracking system, the solution to the UPS pay-for- performance system, and the basis for this book.
So, as I began the research for this book, I decided to meditate on the question:
“What is the best way to connect with you, my internal guide?”
