One personal example...
My (author) son Mike is in the printing business. His business was not growing as fast as he would like. He was doing many things well, but his focus was on correcting errors or, to put it in another way, finding what was wrong and fixing it.
As a result, very little progress was made in error reduction or on any of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for his business.
I knew that you get what you focus on. If you focus on what you don’t want, you get more of it. On the other hand, if you continue to focus on what you do want, you get more of it.
I tried different ways of persuading Mike to focus on his desired goals with little real progress. There was no disagreement, just little action.
Doug Krug was giving a speech in our area and Mike and I went to hear him. During the talk, Doug asked the audience why they thought Tiger Woods at his peak was the world’s best golfer. The response was “focus.”
