For example, in the golfing exercise Doug took us through, the question “what did I do wrong?” might bring an answer like “your head came up too soon.” Good answer to the wrong question as my focus would be on keeping my head down as I took the next shot rather than getting the ball in the hole.
That would resolve that specific issue, but not provide all of the information to get the ball in the hole. The answer would have me focused on a partial solution while forgetting the whole of the issue at hand.
This is a very important point on using your intuition productively. Perhaps the best way is to ask your intuition “what is the question?”
Doug’s story describes well how our ego or intellect works as the master rather than the servant. We solve one problem only to have another pop up it’s head. It’s like Whack a Mole.
On the other hand, “how can I best get the ball in the hole?” will bring an answer like “pick a 2 iron, aim about 10 yards left of the flag to compensate for the wind and keep your head down.” Your intuition looks at the big picture.
