The Poker Metaphor
Poker is a good metaphor for how intuitive direction relates to life and the choices we must make:
First, by discerning the patterns (Past Intuition, Chapter 3) of other players, a great poker player can often determine whether one is bluffing or has a winning hand.
These patterns are revealed by putting together multiple clues from the other players’ body language, eyes, sweat, appearance, etc.; and drawing conclusions as to the power of the cards in their hands.
Much of this is unconscious and shows up as intuition. I call it Past Intuition because there is a logical and explainable way that this level of intuition works:
As a poker player, I experienced a similar situation in the past and won or lost. Based on that experience, I unconsciously draw a conclusion and act on it.
Present Intuition is used by the poker player in the sense that their observation skills are finely tuned. They can pick up the subtle shifts in another person’s mannerisms.
