UPS was his first managerial experience. He saw the negative results of we/they (management vs. union/people) and was tasked to plan a three-year shut-down of operations in Eastern Pennsylvania.
He watched as 10,000 people lost their jobs. Many middle and older aged men lost everything after decades of service, based on powers beyond their immediate control.
Basch envisioned the power of a company where employees were treated with respect and dignity. He left UPS as a result of that vision – a vision he later attributed to his leader within.
From there, he spent three years as a management consultant with A.T. Kearney in New York and the Rapistan Technics Group in Grand Rapids, MI.
Founding Officer of FedEx
Mike was a founding officer of FedEx starting seven months before the company began operations in 1973. He was there as a Senior Vice President for their first ten years. During those ten years FedEx became the largest venture start-up and the first American company to reach $1 Billion in ten years.
Basch was drawn to FedEx after hearing founder Fred Smith’s core philosophy:
