Then, I would say to my wife Karen “wow, are you angry,” never once realizing that I am the one who is angry. Not that others aren’t angry as well, just that I need to own my own anger.
Philosopher, Ken Wilber, says that in order to grow, one must bring the shadow into consciousness and own the repressed contents. He suggests a 3 - 2- 1 approach that I mentioned here.
3 is 3rd person (it). See clearly how the anger is out there. Live it through complete awareness. Become aware of the anger in our culture. Experience the anger at our government, for example. People will generally agree that our federal government is broken and are angry as a result.
Again, this doesn’t mean that our anger is not justified, just that we need to own our share personally, so it can be pulled back.
2 is 2nd person (you). Experience the anger directly in others close to you. See how they are angry, especially when they feel a bit powerless. Live it and see it. Then pull it back and personally own it.
If you get into an argument with someone, try to dissect it. When did it start? What was the trigger?
