Notes From Rabbi Dunsker
January seems like it was very full of wonderful things, and even though we have finished that month I want to review the events just because they were extra special.
Rabbi Druin (the younger) came to not only repair our Torah, but he took some time out to teach our religious school kids and also to speak with the adult members of our community who stopped in to watch him work. This experience was moving for everyone who took part, and Rabbi Druin told me how special he thought our community was.
MLK Mitzvah Day was wonderful—I know a lot of you put in hard work at the food bank, and we had a nice crowd of all ages at Kol Ami working together to make the world just a little bit better.
The AIDS Quilt. I hope many of you got a chance to see this powerful and moving exhibit. It was up on our walls for a little over a week, and I think everyone who saw it was touched by it. One of the people who was here for MLK day looked up at the two
panels we had (12 name patches) and said, “oh, I knew him!” AIDS has touched so many of us in one way or another, I learned this week that the United States has recorded 50,000 new cases of AIDS every year for the past 3 years. If you thought this epidemic was behind us, think again.
I want to really thank everyone who helped make these moments so successful with a special thank you to Amy S for her work in organizing our MLK Mitzvah Day and making it so successful.
Oh and guess what—Purim is coming, Purim is coming!
I know there has not been a lot of information about the shpiel this year. I haven’t been begging for performers or directors or musicians because this year we are bringing in a special exciting performance, which I can’t quite talk about yet because it’s not totally nailed down. But, I promise you will love it!
Our Purim Shpiel will be Wednesday, February 28th at 6:00 p.m. Please wear costumes or one will be put on you, and bring new or gently used pots and pans and utensils to be used as groggers; they will then be donated to the Community Warehouse so that folks without means will be able to have what they need in their homes. Our Purim carnival will be Sunday, March 4th, filled with games and fun and prizes, balloons and face painting, cupcake walk and more!
Purim is our most joyful holiday of the year, so let’s bring the joy!
Amy’s Comments
Shalom, CKA Families! Instead of my usual Musings: By Amy, this month I thought I would highlight some of our upcoming Religious School activities. Hopefully, this will help families with their planning, although we would love to see the entire community turn out to Class Shabbat services! Please let me know if you have any questions.
