Cisco and 9-1-1

Call Routing

ANDERSON

by Michael Anderson, National
Sales Director of 911 ETC
(www.911etc.com)
O
utgoing 9-1-1 calls present a
challenge for the enterprise. Will the
screen at the 911 Center show the
correct address, or will help be dispatched to
the wrong site? Is the location information
granular enough to meet state legislation
requirements? Will the call route correctly, or
will an employee dialing from his home ofice
in Atlanta ind that the help on the other end
of the line is hundreds of miles away?
Getting into the weeds of 9-1-1 regulations
and details is a daunting task. Several
organizations are midstream in a transition
from a TDM-based ALI management
practice to having to navigate the waters of
the mobility IP brings with it. Soft phones,
SIP trunking, remote workers, remote sites
– ensuring that every outgoing 9-1-1 call
is going to work as advertised can quickly
become a task that seems insurmountable.
Yet, liability concerns and the greater issue
of lives at stake demand that organizations
address it. When an organization’s network
is distributed across multiple locations it
brings challenges; some not so obvious.
The item often overlooked until it’s too
late: what happens when a 9-1-1 call is dialed

GREEN

H
R departments are not necessarily
bastions of technological
conservatism but they can be
reserves of time honored practices in
the methods used to recruit and later
nurture talent. Now, with the arrival of
the millennials, a generation of so-called
technology natives, HR has to change.
