I used to wonder how my father
could justify and glorify that car-
nage of the past since we are a
vegetarian family and very caring
and compassionate towards ani-
mals and despise any form of
cruelty against them. But I could
never gather enough courage to
argue with him in this regard as
I feared hurting the profound
sentiments of a man who was so
passionate about the legacy he
had inherited from his ances-
tors.
Few years passed by and one day, I did the unthinkable as an
obedient son I used to be always. I openly expressed my disa-
greement with our legacy stained with the blood and pain of in-
nocent and helpless animals, very politely though. My father, lis-
tened to my words very thoughtfully with patience and a caring
smile and hugged me with tears in his eyes.
Next morning, when I woke up and casually passed by the draw-
ing room, I found that bow and arrow missing from its wall
which used to be the essence of our legacy. I saw my father smil-
ing at me and ran towards him in joy seeking the cozy hug of a
truly caring and compassionate human being.
And yes, legends of our ancestors’ hunting
triumphs were never ever narrated in our
home thenceforth.
