110 UNSUNG HEROES- AN
INTERVIEW WITH THE DINING
HALL STAFF
On January 30, 2023, the Editorial Board team along with the Mess Prefects interviewed Ms.
Baljeet Kaur, the teacher in charge of the dinning hall, Mr. Asha Singh Negi, the head chef and
Mr. Arjun Kumar, the manager of the school mess. In a day boarding school like ours, children
eat most of their meals at school. Our mess team works tirelessly to make sure the Gyananda
family receives wholesome meals on time. When the kids relish the food, it brightens Mr. Negi
or Mr. Arjun's day. In addition to tending to all the pupils with allergies and illlnesses, Ms.
Baljeet Kaur ensures every child has eaten her food. When it comes to eating, she is the last
person to serve herself. The Editorial Board and the Mess Prefects had a heart-warming and
enlightening experience that made them feel deeply grateful. Through the interview, students
also developed the four core interviewing skills: open questioning, affirming, reflecting, and
summarizing. The interview is as follows:
Student 1: How long does it usually take to prepare food for approximately 400 people, and
when do you start preparing?
Mr. Negi: Preparation starts at 4:00 a.m. and goes on until 9:00 p.m.
Student 2: What do you find interesting about your job?
Mr. Negi: I enjoy cooking south Indian food and the food that is eaten on special occasions.
Student 3: Would you like the school to enrol you for a course that would enhance your
culinary skill?
Mr. Negi: If I were given such an opportunity, I would love it.
Student 4: How do you buy grocery for so many people?
Arjun Sir: The menu is pre-decided, and perishables and other essential ingredients are
ordered immediately.
Student 5: Would you like to introduce any new dishes to the menu? If so, what would they
be?
Ms. Baljeet Kaur: We are open to introducing dishes on popular demand.
Student 1: Do you need any changes or gadgets in the kitchen pantry to make your lives easy?
Mr. Negi : It would be nice to get more staff, an oven/griller, and a tandoor.
Student 2: What is done with the food scraps at the end of the day?
Mr. Arjun: We give our food scraps to the goshala. Ms. Priyanka Rai
