Boeing Sends Students
BPS Hosts First Competitive Innovation Games
Brevard Public Schools hosted the first competitive Innovation Games for elementary, middle and high
school students from public, charter and private schools. The event was the largest gathering of STEM/STEAM competitions in the state of Florida, with 63 participating schools and more than 700 students. Students teams competed in coding, unmanned aerial systems (drones), remotely operated underwater vehicles, carbon dioxide dragsters, trebuchets, gliders and presentations of student designs/inventions for a “Shark Tank” event. The event provided an opportunity for students to demonstrate, learn and spark a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM).

on a Mission to Mars
BPS students created out of this world habitats to plan for life on Mars, as part of Boeing’s “Destination Mars Mission Challenge Day” – an event designed to provoke students’ imaginations and encourage them to pursue careers in STEM-related fields through hands-on class activities. Throughout the year, students work on several challenges in class and then gather together to demonstrate their work and findings. This year’s challenges included:
• Designing wearable technologies that would help people live on Mars
• Coding and designing in Minecraft, a block-based building video game, to create a dome-like habitat
• Programming robots and rovers to maneuver and complete tasks on a Martian map
• Creating a pod-like model to help humans live on
Mars, the ‘Challenge Day’ event involved more
than 160 students representing 14 schools. Boeing representatives were on hand to judge the competition. Winning teams included:
