The Facilities’ team has been busy since the start of school. Air conditioning issues have topped our “to do” list. Thank you to students, teachers and administrators who have endured warm classrooms while we work through a variety of issues that ranged from a bird in the transformer to the oak tree that ate the chilled water pipe to controls that aren’t working yet.
The most important point is that working air conditioning in schools is the highest priority focus of our work
during these hot, humid months. The school district has 12,800,000 square feet of space, equivalent to 6,000 homes. Many of our 4,500 instructional spaces have individual air handlers, resulting in thousands of pieces
of mechanical equipment. Staff and contractor resources are deployed quickly, but sometimes the solution requires parts or warranty service from the manufacturer or other responses that may take some time.
One of our process changes this year is that maintenance does the initial triage on the issue and then projects’
and maintenance teams work together on the solution. We’ve adopted a model of joint ownership of any problem and that is translating to better service at the schools. Going forward, we are analyzing the data regarding our air conditioning issues and will likely recommend some additional process improvements for next year.
The school year also started with facility renewal work at West Shore Jr./Sr. High that will be completed during summer 2019. Renovations for accessibility were completed at Harbor City Elementary with additional facility renewal work planned for summer 2019.
Planning and design work has already started for these projects. Construction contracts will be issued through the fall months.
Other major capital projects included renovations at Palm Bay High and Eau Gallie High (including the new aviation lab!). Serving line renovations were also completed
at Titusville High, Kennedy Middle and South Lake Elementary.
The Independent Citizens Oversight Committee continues to meet every other month. Staff provides extensive reporting on revenues, expenditures and project status. The sales surtax site and Facilities Services’ Facebook page are good resources to quickly see what’s happening as well. The next ICOC meeting will be Wednesday
Oct. 17, 2018 at the Facilities’ conference room at the Educational Services Facility at 3 p.m.
Remember much of the sales surtax work is not easily visible, so if you see the Sales Surtax at Work Banner displayed, check out what’s happening inside the school, behind the walls, under the floors and above the ceilings!
