Student Spotlight: Toni Hughes
One of our recent graduates of the Cocoa campus GED cohort program, Toni Hughes, knew that she wanted a better job and greater opportunities to contribute to our communi- ty. When the chance to participate in the new 8 week cohort program at Brevard Adult Ed was presented to her, she enthusiastically enrolled! The structured class and one on one tutoring with experienced, dedicated instructors boost- ed her confidence and she quickly passed all of her exams. Toni is now working for Brevard County as an administrative assistant in the Natural Resources Management Department, a dream job that she got with the assistance of the Bridges Program at Vocational Rehabilitation. She looks forward to rising in the ranks there and educating her fellow citizens on the effects of climate change. Her best advice for achieving success is simple but powerful, “Set your mind to it and just do it.”
“I never would have been able to finish if it wasn’t for that class. It made me want to show up and kept me on task which I struggled with a couple times before.” –Toni Hughes, GED co-hort student .
Our English
Program: Building
a Better Future
for our Community
ESOL is a growing area in Adult Educa-
tion, we are currently serving around 375
students! These students come to us from
Ukraine, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, as well as
many other countries. Recently, after Hur-
ricane Maria a large number of people have entered Brevard County from Puerto Rico. This huge influx
of individuals has called us to a new area of need. With the help of Wendi Jo Bost, a program manager at CareerSource Brevard, we are working to help dis- placed Puerto Ricans find a life in Brevard County. Two days a week we hold English classes at each CareerSource in Brevard, these classes are run by Rebekah Watts and Karon Weems, two talented teachers from Brevard Adult Ed. These teachers not only work with the basics of the English language,
but have also helped these individuals grow into the norms of working and living in Brevard County. They have become direct contacts as well as friends to their students.

ESOL classes at CareerSource are currently serving around twenty-eight students. Every student enrolled will receive their ESOL class free of charge and each term runs eight to nine weeks long. While in this class students receive two online accounts, one with Rosetta Stone and the other with Burlington English. These accounts can be accessed in class, or for independent study at home. Students obtain a Ventures Workbook as well to work on their reading and listening skills. At the end of the term students will be given a certificate, stating how many hours they completed of English classes to give to a prospective employer or to keep for themselves. The next term will be starting on January 14th, 2019.
