The National Speech and Debate Association’s Honor Society recently selected Alexandra Dattoli, an English teacher at Palm Bay Magnet High, as a winner of the Diamond Coach Award.
The National Speech and Debate Association
is the largest interscholastic speech and
debate organization serving middle school, high school, and collegiate students in the US. The association’s honor society has been recognizing student and coach achievements in speech
and debate since 1925. The Diamond Award recognizes a professional career that combines
excellence and longevity
in speech and debate. A
coach who attains 1,500
points is awarded a first
diamond; they receive a
second diamond for 3,000
points, a third for 6,000 points, and so on. Dattoli is a first diamond winner.
Dattoli will be recognized at the world’s largest academic competition, the National Speech and Debate Tournament, in Birmingham, Alabama on June 22, 2017.

: Barnes & Noble Melbourne names Kara Mathews as the local winner of the My Favorite Teacher contest.
Kara Mathews, comprehensive science teacher at Central Middle, has been named the local winner
of the Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher contest, which ran
her nominating student, Manuel Gutierrez, and eleven peer finalists, at an awards ceremony on April 3. Finalist awards were presented by Superintendent Desmond Blackburn.
Matthews will advance to the regional competition where five winners will be selected to receive a $500 Barnes & Noble gift card and a Samsung NOOK®. From the pool of regional winners, Barnes & Noble will name one teacher the
Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year, who will receive $5,000 and the title of “Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher of the Year.” The national winner will be recognized at a special community celebration at their local Barnes & Noble store, and the winning teacher’s school will receive $5,000.

The contest provides students with the opportunity to express their appreciation for their teachers by submitting poems, essays, or thank you letters, as a form of nomination, which demonstrate the ways in which their favorite teacher has impacted their lives and in what ways.
