Growing District Prompts Poten al Boundary Changes
By Susan Hann, PE, AICP, director of planning and project management
Every year, the district planning team prepares a Student Accommoda on Plan that projects student membership for the next ve years. Some of the primary factors include input from principals and administrators and analysis of cohort and feeder chain trends, local government development data, and birth and matricula on rates.
In order to implement
a endance boundary
changes for the 2018-
2019 school year, the
process started this
summer with the facili es
sta developing poten al
a endance boundary
change scenarios and
ve ng them through
a ected principals and
assistant superintendents
of leading and learning as
well as other members of the BPS team.
The recommended changes were presented to the Brevard County School Board at a workshop held Sept. 26. Next in
the process is a series of community mee ngs throughout
the month of October. Also, the School Board appointed an Evalua on Commi ee who will score all of the proposed scenarios against a set of criteria in early November. Municipal sta also reviewed the scenarios at their Capital Outlay Commi ee mee ng on Oct. 16.
The results of the community input and scenario evalua on process will be presented to the School Board as an informa on item at their Nov. 21 mee ng. School Board ac on is planned for Dec. 12 with the nal public hearing scheduled for Jan. 28.
Details regarding the proposed scenarios and the process are available on the BPS Proposed 2018-19 A endance Boundary Change Website. Check back frequently as new scenarios and community mee ngs may be added throughout the process. The website also includes a survey which provides another opportunity for the community to comment.
Ques ons or comments may also be directed to facili es sta via a dedicated phone number, 321-735-9735,
or email a endanceboundarychange@brevardschools.org.

family support and professional development provided at the school and district levels. This also is the second me the Merri Island, Fla. school of choice earned the Blue Ribbon designa on with the rst win in 2007.
“The rst me, we were recognized for performance. This second me, it was a special and unique look at how we’ve developed even further and elevated beyond what we had already accomplished. It is a signi cant honor,” said Corneau.
The school’s model of collabora ve leadership places value on teachers’ ideas and professional judgement. According to Corneau, faculty are encouraged to take risks or “fail forward” in order to implement innova ve ideas and to model the growth mindset of “not there yet, but I know I can get there.”
Winning schools receive a ag to display as a symbol of exemplary teaching and learning. The honorees also will be celebrated during an event Nov. 6-7 in Washington, D.C.
