Halloween is an exci ng me for children, but they o en forget the dangers along our streets while trick or trea ng. In fact, the Na onal Highway Tra c Safety Administra on reports that Halloween is consistently one of the top three days for pedestrian injuries and fatali es. During this me of year, children and parents must be mindful of the extra steps they need to take in order to stay safe and seen. Here are some sugges ons for the good of the Brevard community.
MOTORISTS
• Slow down in residen al neighborhoods and obey all tra c signs and signals
• Look for children crossing the street, heighten your reac ons for dart outs
• Carefully enter and exit driveways and alleys
• Turn on your headlights to make yourself more visible – even in the daylight.
• Broaden your scanning. Be mindful of kids in yards, on curbs, and in driveways
PARENTS
• Plan and discuss the route your trick-or-treaters will follow
• Instruct children to travel only in familiar areas and along established routes
• Review trick-or-trea ng safety precau ons, including pedestrian and tra c safety rules
• Teach children to stop only at well-lit houses
TRICK-OR-TREATERS
• Be bright at night – wear retro-re ec ve tape on costumes and treat buckets to improve visibility to motorists and others
• Wear disguises that don’t obstruct vision and avoid facemasks
• Carry a ashlight containing fresh ba eries, and place it face down in the treat bucket to free up one hand. Never shine it into the eyes of oncoming drivers.
• Stay on sidewalks and avoid walking in streets if possible.
• Look le , right, and le again before crossing the street
• Cross streets only at the corner, and never cross between parked vehicles or mid-block.
