eing a relatively young team with only one senior, the girl’s tennis team had a successful season. Having started their season off strong with major wins against Bayside with result of 6-1, the
girls continued to have a great season ending with a record of 9-4. They had a notable finish in the Cape Coast Conference finishing fourth in the North and seventh out of 16 teams overall. In addition to a great performance at regionals, the girls played hard in a tough district tournament with Nishka Dalal,8, and Ashlee Hirji, 12, finishing second in their respective lines. First ranked seed, Ria Parsad, 9, was very proud of her team.
“The team always cheers each other on and is very supportive. We are definitely a tennis family,” Parsad said.
Along with a recordable season from the girl’s team, the boy’s tennis team also a successful overall season. After having a terrific start to their season, the boys continued to perform and play hard. They ended their season with a record of 12-2 with several notable games. The boy’s team finished first in the North Conference with a second overall finish in the entire Cape Coast Conference. Logan Sutherlin, 10, was named to CCC All-Conference team. They also had an outstanding performance at districts finishing second place. Key results from districts included Lleyton Kunik, 11, finishing second in his line and Nathan Rao, 9, finishing first in his line. The boy’s successful results at districts qualified them to compete at Regionals at The Benjamin School.
“I had a really fun season playing with everyone, but we’re winning districts next year,” Kunik said.
Boy’s Lacrosse
oasting a roster where half the players had never even picked up a stick before, the boys varsity lacrosse team went into the season optimistic. Finishing the season with an even record of
9-9, the lacrosse team had some interesting things happen over the course of their games. Getting invited to play at Disney for the first time ever, captain Collin Watkins, 12, led the squad as they faced off against Riverdale Country, a team visiting from New York. Although the outcome of the game wasn’t the result they were going for, simply being at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports was an experience in and of itself.
“I thought it was cool to play a team from a different area of the country because people that play up north play a lot differently than we play down here but it was also really intimidating because, we knew nothing about them going into the game,” said Watkins.
The boys varsity team can also claim another first, having come out on top in every match they played against Melbourne. Each of the games finished with at least an eight goal difference and great satisfaction for the entire team being that it was the first season that Edgewood boys varsity had beat Melbourne in lacrosse ever.
“It was an accomplishment to finally beat Melbourne. We’ve never beaten them before, we should’ve beat them several other times but, to finally come together and beat them this year, for the first time, after six years, it felt good,” said Watkins.
