Atlantis’ Silent Magic Makers

Brevard Public Schools services a wide variety of students within the district. One unique population is our students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH). Within the county there are six cluster site schools that service D/HH students in Pre-K through 12th grade that offer audiological services, itinerate and school-based instructional services, interpreting services, communication assistances, and instructional assistances.
Atlantis Elementary became a cluster site school for D/HH students in 2000 and currently has a team of Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, as well as interpreters, communication assistances and Speech/Language Pathologists, who work directly with students to provide access every day to the curriculum and communication taking place within the classroom.
Atlantis provides D/HH students with instruction where language and communication is key in building their intellectual growth. Teachers use total communication which includes signed, oral, auditory, and written and visual aids to meet the individual needs of the student, while providing individualized standards-based instruction calibrated to their developmental growth.
What makes Atlantis unique is that they service students who require more intense services on a daily basis. Going into the general education classroom, as well as varying exceptionalities classroom,
they provide direct instruction in all subject areas. D/HH teachers partner with the classroom teacher to interpret and provide communication assistance daily to support students in gaining access to the curriculum and standards, and encourage interaction to foster a sense of belonging among their hearing peers.
Inclusion of their D/HH students does not simply stay within
the classroom setting. Atlantis’ vision is: “Working together to launch life-long learners with excellence as our standard.” This is demonstrated daily as students, teachers, staff and administration take the time to interact with our D/HH students and learning signs to communicate and build relationships.
