That all of our School Board members are volunteering weekly
at Endeavour Elementary?
They started in January and will continue through April, to help students get ready for FSA in May. Each member is assigned approximately 10 students that they mentor during their iReady reading time to remind them of helpful strategies and help them to focus and stay on task. They are also working with Kindergarten students on reading interventions. Through this experience, school board members have gotten to
see the challenges of our neediest students first-hand.
“My students share with me the struggles they are having at home and school,” said District 5 representative Katye Campbell.
“I am working with students where both parents have been deported, some have been abused, and then others who had
not heard a word of English until their first day of school.”
The challenges at Endeavour are immense, and the turnaround effort requires an “all hands on deck” approach. Board members volunteer 1-2 days each week, along with BPS staff and a host of other dedicated community volunteers.
“It is wonderful to be able to celebrate our students’ successes and see their smiles each week,” said Cheryl McDougall, District 2 representative. “It is an amazing feeling to be able to help our students excel and grow in order to reach their full potential.”
