Avoiding Procrastination:
With all of their tasks lined up and ready to be completed, many students fall victim to procrastination; commonly, students overestimate the amount of time they have to complete their difficult assignments and push them off until the last minute. This can be detrimental to students’ grades and success in their classes. Caspian Chaharom, 12, suggests avoiding procrastination by creating a timeline and sticking to it.
“In order to stop myself from procrastinating, I often remind myself of how much time I have to complete projects and important assignments, because if I put them off for too long, I won’t have enough time to complete my other work,” said Chaharom.
  Staying Motivated:
As the school year continues, students begin to forgo their plans and give in to the end of the year by submitting assignments late or not studying for tests. As someone who has seen many of her friends submit to these behaviors, Shayla Hirji, 12, believes in staying motivated all throughout the school year. As a Senior this year, Hirji knows just how important motivation will be this year.
“This year my motivation is to keep my grades up so I’ll have a better chance of getting into college and I know from the past that if I don’t do my homework the night it was assigned, chances are that I won’t do it at all,” Hirji said. “If I do this, it makes my grades worse and means that I have to work 10 times harder to get them back up.”
To stay motivated, Hirji recommends setting reminders about important dates and encouraging your parents to get involved in your school life to have at-home motivation as well as your own self- motivation.
 Finishing Strong:
The final home stretch of the year comes within the last few months of school, which contains AP testing and vital final exams. During this time of the year students sometimes find themselves struggling to keep afloat. Olivia Day, 12, is one Senior who knows the importance of finishing the school year out strong.
“I strive to finish strong mainly because I am motivated to get into a great college and thinking about my goals helps motivate me to prove myself to others and show that I can go places and make a difference,” said Day.
As someone who works to be the best she can be, Day knows that her hard work will always pay off and be worth all of those late nights and study sessions.
“It feels so good to meet all of my goals. Last year I made straight A’s and I felt like all of my work really paid off, it’s such a nice feeling to know that something you worked so hard for was worth all of the effort you put into it,” said Day.
After a long and relaxing summer, it can be difficult to prepare for the rigor of a school year full of academic commitment. As deadlines and tests begin to swamp student’s days some struggle with finding their footing. To keep organized and on top of workloads, consider these tips from students who have gone through the same thing, and when feeling overwhelmed, just keep in mind these five steps to success.
