Sales Tax at Work – Ge ng Ready for Summer

Spring is the me of year where the Capital Projects Team transi ons from closing out last summer’s projects and preparing for this summer’s projects. Several facility renewal sales surtax projects are planned for summer 2018 – including:
• Coquina Elementary
• Rockledge High
• Cocoa High
• Croton Elementary
• Lewis Carrol Elementary • Williams Elementary
• Mila Elementary
• Golfview Elementary
• Creel Elementary
• South Lake Elementary
• West Shore Jr./Sr. High School – Phase 1
Facility renewal typically means major improvements to air condi oning and electrical systems. Other work may include building envelopes – roof, gu ers, windows, plumbing and correc ng code de ciencies. Each
school has its own program of work based on a facility assessment completed in 2014 and a current review of cri cal systems.
The sales surtax program only includes the program
of work approved by the voters, which is strictly for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building envelope renewal as well as correc ng code de ciencies. Other capital funds may be used for either supplemen ng the sales surtax funds or for other types of projects such as cafeteria serving line improvements at Kennedy Middle School and Titusville High School funded through Food Services.

The District School Security program was advanced by the School Board based on a recommenda on from the sales surtax Independent Ci zens Oversight Commi ee (ICOC). The fencing and access control projects (as approved in the sales surtax referendum) are well underway and should be complete at all schools in the next few months.
Overall, the sales surtax program is proceeding as scheduled and budgeted. Revenue receipts are exceeding the ini al projec on, so that has allowed the district to address cri cal failures as they occur without impac ng the planned schedule.
A good way to quickly see what is happening with the sales surtax is to visit the ICOC tab on the sales surtax site. There are detailed and summary nancial reports posted for every mee ng as well as the full agenda packages. The next ICOC mee ng will be Wednesday, February 21, 2018 in the Facili es Conference Room at the Educa onal Services Facility at 3 p.m.
