initial reluctance to consider an LED sign, managers decided to retrofit an LED sign into
the existing framework, and program the sign’s content so it mimics the look of the old
marquee—right down to a mismatched letter and the background color of the original
Bakelite tiles (see Lebowsky Center photos previous page).

When to pull the plug on incandescents
It’s not unusual for lovers of historic buildings to be apprehensive about incorporating new
technology on their marquee signs. After all, much of the charm of these theaters is the
        marquees.
It’s important to understand that an LED, like an incandescent, is simply a light source that’s
produced a different way. Restoring a sign using LED lights can maintain the same look of
the old-fashioned incandescents, but with modern conveniences and increased energy
        efficiency.
When owners of the The Clyde Theatre in Fort Wayne, Indiana, embarked on a $9 million
renovation of the 1951 art deco building, they did a complete upgrade of the interior of
the building, and thought it was appropriate to modernize the marquee. Since the original
marquee was ripped off the facade in the 1970s, they had to rely on original blueprints to
rebuild the sign and its 60-foot spire.
Originally a curved letter board sign that advertised current and upcoming acts, the sign
designers envisioned a marquee that was more modern while also paying homage to the
building’s heritage. The new marquee is anchored by a 4’ x 20’ curved digital message
