would help them). Other activities that can celebrate the existing assets within Ormsgill include the
formation of a Street Association and a best street competition, which would also challenge the litter issue
that arose from the survey. It is recommended that such projects are delivered in partnership with local
housing providers. The National Lottery Community Fund would be a well-fitting funder for such work.
UCLan can evaluate and report on the feasibility and impact of this. Cultural inclusion events could also
be used to better integrate the Syrian refugees living in the area.
Activities for young mums
Findings: Young mothers are the loneliest group of people in Ormsgill
The above findings lend themselves to the development of a dedicated community connectivity group for
young mothers. Further research needs to take place to understand the specific issues faced by young
mums, and the sort of activities these women would like to support them. This could potentially be
delivered in partnership with Women’s Community Matters and Family Action. The National Lottery
Community Fund would be a well-fitting funder for such work. UCLan can evaluate and report on the
feasibility and impact of this.
Cultural Connectivity Activities
Findings: Refugee women have poor emotional well-being, high levels of loneliness and a desire to
integrate
Two Syrian refugee families were interviewed as part of the survey. They showed a desire to integrate
with the community but feel that there are few opportunities to do this. They are also fearful of
discrimination and abuse, fuelled by social media, which they have seen. More research into the
experiences of the refugee families is needed to inform programmes to enhance integration. Cultural
connectivity activities should be developed and delivered in partnership with the refugee families, and it
is recommended that members of these families are invited to sit on the Love Ormsgill group. This could
potentially be delivered in partnership with Furness Refugee Support Group. Potential funders include
Cumbria County Council Local Committee Grants, The Edge Fund and the Allen Lane Foundation. UCLan
can evaluate and report on the feasibility and impact of this.
