Structured governance
For Love Ormsgill to thrive as a community group it is essential that capacity is built within the residents
in the community. It is recommended that advise is sought by CVS Cumbria as they offer trustee and
governance training and that local businesses are approached to discuss ways in which they can support
the group.
Limitations
We acknowledge that this study has a number of limitations including that of adding little to the literature
on the perspectives and social connections of children and young people (under 18s) – or those from
particular BAME groups living in the area. Targeted working with local organisations would be a useful
measure to include in future research to ensure that all groups, especially the ‘hidden’ groups whose
voices may be may less well heard, are better included in the research process.
Comparing the survey results with the local data discussed in chapter two reveals that the sample is not
entirely representative of the community of Ormsgill. However, they do serve to illuminate some of the
underlying social issues in the area, and can be used as a catalyst to ignite conversations and activity on a
local level.
Finally, the use of children as community researchers may have presented a number of challenges,
potentially impacting on the quality of the data collected. During the doorstep surveys, some residents
may not have felt comfortable disclosing sensitive information about themselves to children, and the
children may not have been adequately mature to understand and respond to responses. However, we
are confident that the role of the local police officers in supporting the children provided some quality
assurance in relation to the process and outcomes of data collection.
Next Steps
These recommendations will now be enacted upon by the community and key partners through the
Strengthening Ormsgill Community Group and Love Ormsgill. A report will follow in 2021 outlining how
these recommendations have been developed into practice within Ormsgill and the impact these have
had.
