ในปี ค.ศ. 2025 The American Society of Addiction Medicine ได้ออกแนวทางทางคลินิกในการ
เข้าถึงและคงอยู่ในระบบการดูแลผู้ที่ยังไม่หยุดใช้ยาเสพติด โดยเน้นที่ความยืดหยุ่น และหลากหลายของการรักษา
ลดเงื่อนไขในการอยู่ในระบบการดูแล เพื่อสร้างแรงจูงใจให้ผู้ใช้ยาเสพติดเข้าสู่ระบบการดูแลรักษาให้นานที่สุด
เพราะตระหนักถึงข้อจ ากัดของเป้าหมายและหลักการบ าบัดฟื้นฟูที่เน้นการรักษาให้หายเท่านั้น ท าให้เป้าหมาย
เชิงสุขภาพ และสังคมอื่นๆที่ส าคัญ ที่ต้องใช้แนวทางการลดอันตรายจากการใช้ยาถูกมองข้ามไป
โดยส่วนตัวผู้เขียนมองว่านี่น่าจะเป็นสัญญาณเริ่มต้นเล็กๆ สู่การปรับเปลี่ยนความคิดหรือความเชื่อในการ
จัดการผู้ติดสารเสพติดที่ส าคัญ เป็นการมองผู้ติดยาเสพติดแบบไม่ใช่ขาวกับด าเท่านั้น มุมมองเช่นนี้จะเป็น
ประโยชน์กับทุกฝ่ายในการจัดการปัญหาดังกล่าวอย่างแน่นอน ถือเป็นโอกาสที่ดีที่ในสภาวะที่การพัฒนาการรักษา
และยารักษาผู้ติดยาเสพติดยังมีไม่มาก และยังไม่มียารักษาผู้ติดสารเสพติด โดยเฉพาะกัญชา และยาเสพติดกลุ่ม
สารกระตุ้น การดูแลรักษาแบบลดการใช้สารเสพติดก็เป็นทางเลือกหนึ่งที่มีประโยชน์ ท าให้ผู้ติดสารเสพติด
มีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น และสามารถอยู่ร่วมกับผู้อื่นในสังคมอย่างเป็นปกติสุขได้
