Background: Abstract
Mentorship is essential in medical education, guiding students academically and
professionally. Without a good mentoring, feedback, and remediation system, assessments
may be weakened or even undermined. Since 2017, the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi
Hospital has integrated mentorship into its curriculum, assigning each faculty mentor to 4-5
students. Monitoring student progress, encouraging reflection, facilitating the enhancement
of metacognition, and encouraging the development of individual competency plans were
among the essential roles of Ramathibodi’s mentor in assessment.
Methods: This study uses a retrospective qualitative approach to explore the mentor-mentee
relationship in undergraduate medical education. We analyzed reflective writing samples
from 525 medical students (178 second-year, 173 third-year, and 174 fifth-year) collected
in 2023 through thematic analysis. The study identifies key themes that reveal the mutual
impact of mentorship, offering insights into how it influences students’ personal and
professional growth. By capturing diverse experiences across different stages of medical
training, this study highlights the transformative role of mentorship in medical education
and the advancement of students’ competencies, providing a deeper understanding of
mentees’ reflections on their development.
Results: Conclusion: Our findings indicate that most students find the mentorship program with reflection
activities and individual development plans beneficial in various ways (93.5%, n = 351).
It fosters strong bonds among mentors, mentees, and peer groups, offers a safe space
for sharing and guidance, encourages self-reflection and metacognition, broadens
perspectives of the professional path, fosters strong positive relationships, and boosts
motivation. Students also receive constructive feedback on their study approaches and
report gaining personalized education.
This study emphasizes mentorship’s crucial role in supporting students’ competency
progression, emotional resilience, community building, and career guidance. This
is achieved by promoting the mentoring system, integrating it into the competency
assessment system, demonstrating its benefits on the student competency development
plan, stimulating coaching feedback, fostering positive mentor-mentee relationships, and
providing personalized education.
