shear plane starting at the surface behind the surcharge down to mid-height of the LLC, which
then sloped down to the base of the wall. Wall pressure on the cantilever was consistent with
Rankine earth pressure after consideration of the cohesion. Wall pressures on the MSE panels were
less than half of those on the cantilever wall presumably due to the lateral resistance provided by
                 the reinforcements.

10AM - Use of Low-Density Cellular Concrete for Air Convection Embankment to Protect Permafrost
10:50AM Foundations in Cold Regions Air convection embankment (ACE) is an excellent technique
to protect the permafrost from thawing in road construction in cold regions. However, in many
interior Alaska areas, the coarse gravel or crushed rocks needed for ACE construction are not
readily available. Burdened by the need to ship suitable rocks to remote locations, the cost for
constructing an ACE is often prohibitively high. This presentation will present a new strategy of
using cellular concrete as an alternative material for ACE. The mix designs, testing methods, and
performance of cellular concrete were investigated. Numerical simulation was used to evaluate
the heat transfer patterns and thermal performance of the sand/gravel embankment, the
crushed-rock ACE, and the proposed cellular concrete ACE. Conclusions and recommendations
on further use of cellular concrete for ACE to protect permafrost foundations were provided.

11AM - Current Practices: Specifying Lightweight Cellular Concrete for Geotechnical Applications
11:50AM Lightweight Cellular Concrete used for Geotechnical applications has a wide variety of names
as referenced by state DOT departments. Cellular concrete designations including Lightweight
Cellular Concrete, Low Density Cellular Concrete, Low Density Cementitious Fill and Lightweight
Foamed Concrete Fill to list just a few. Cellular Concrete can be listed in Standard Specifications,
                                                                                               (continued on next page)
