Department of Shipping Technology



          Introduction
        National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) established and merged from three Universities in
        Kaohsiung, including the Kaohsiung Marine University, the Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, and
        the  Kaohsiung  University  of  Applied  Sciences  on  Feb  1,  2018.  The  Department  of  Shipping  Technology  originally
        belonged to National Kaohsiung Marine University, which founded the three-year vocational program of Ship Handling in
        1948. Due to the requirement of the shipping industry and school’s development, it started the five-year junior college
        program  in  1967,  and  was  renamed  as  Navigation  Department  in  1974.  It  further  created  the  two-year  senior  college
        program in 1997, and started offering the four-year bachelor program in 2003. The master program was established in 2012
        and the continuing education program of MBA started in 2017.
        The Department of Shipping Technology currently has five programs: the five-year junior college program, the four-year
        bachelor program, the two-year senior college program and the master program of day school, and the master program at
        the  weekend.  The  student  candidates  who  intend  to  join  into  shipping  career  in  the  future  coming  from  all  different
        education levels are welcome. If the graduated students want to be scholars in the future, they can continue studying PhD
        degree in relevant domains to remain both the broad span and profession of navigation science.

          The Aims of Education
        „We train the students to be a qualified officer as mate, captain and harbor pilot for modern vessels.
        „We train the students to have capability as managers in shipping and maritime logistic industries.
        „We train the students to have talent to manage the maritime traffic safety and maritime policy.
        „We train the students to have capability to combine with operating vessels and submarine survey.
        „We train the students to be the backup human resource of the coast guard, custom and navy.
          Department Features
        1. The course of this department is based on the STCW Convention of the IMO and has passed the DNV (renamed as
           DNV-GL) certification, which fully comply with the IMO model course suggested standards.
        2.  In  accordance  with  the  requirements  of  the  MOTC  for  the  training  and  certification  of  seafarers,  the  department
           cooperates  with  the  seafarer  training  center  to  complete  the  seafarer  training  and  obtain  the  necessary  certificates
           according to the International Conventions.
        3. We maintain a strong link with the shipping industry, focusing on practical learning, strengthening professional English
           and enhancing students' international language capability.
        4. We encourage students to learn from the implementation to achieve a pragmatic attitude to apply their knowledge.
        5. We maintain close cooperation with major shipping companies, Taiwan International Ports Corporation, Coast Guard,
           Customs and the Navy. The students have broad career opportunities in the future.
        6. We encourage faculties to study aboard, to improve professional capabilities related to the shipping industry, and to
           reduce the gap between education and industry requirements.

          Career Directions
        The department mainly trains students to have professional capabilities in "Navigation", "Cargo Operation", "Maritime
        Regulations",  "Ship  Operation"  and  "Ship  Management". Therefore,  the  graduates  are  competent  enough  to  handle  all
        operations and management related to ships. In addition to the traditional employment of shipping industry, the other types
        of ships such as Marine Engineering Vessels, Underwater Surveys, Research Vessels, Tug Boats, Coast Guard, Customs
        and Navy are achievements our students can accomplish.
        In addition to the major career of the captain and the harbor pilot, the shore base units of the shipping company and Port
        Company are the secondary career available for our graduates; they are also good at the shipping supportive operations
        such as the maritime transportation, maritime logistics, and terminal departments. Other professional skills in shipping
        administration, shipping technology, port state control, and ship traffic control are the department’s specialty as well. The
        master program mainly trains students with advanced management techniques related to the shipping industry, making
        them the advanced managers in this field.
