Department of Marine Engineering
Introduction
Department of Marine Engineering (DME) was established since 1957
when the school was elevated from Kaohsiung Marine and Fishery Senior
Vocational School to the status of junior college, institute of technology,
university of science and technology and the merger of three universities in
February 2018. The Department belonging to the College of Maritime
offers five-year vocational programs, two-year bachelor programs, four-
year bachelor programs in the daytime and evening, and both in-service
and daytime master’s programs for students, and recruits Ph.D. students
based on the Program in Maritime Science and Technology.
The Aims of Education
The department upholds the "people-oriented and creative value" concept
of the University. The department’s educational objectives are:
Ÿ Cultivate excellent marine engineers theoretically and practically
according to international conventions on STCW
Ÿ Cultivate professionals to be capable of power system operations,
electric machine control, any types of factory-related mechanical design,
and transportation by sea and land, which enables graduates to be
qualified to work in any sea(land)-related industries including
transportation, system design and control, maintenance, operation and
management.
Department Features
Ÿ All courses are approved by Association of Classification Societies (ACS) and specifications of them are in line with the
international conventions on STCW. Students can choose to take engineer tests at the highest level after graduation.
Ÿ The teaching content is both theoretical and practical, and many teachers who have abundant experiences in being a chief
engineer on the merchant ship can teach students practically and offer career counseling services.
Ÿ The courses are integrated by maritime training center to help students get engineering-related certificates effectively.
Ÿ Cooperate with College of Maritime in implementing "Job Ready Skills Program" of Ministry of Education and set up
the place to assist students to get technician certificates of level B boiler and first-class pressure vessel.
Ÿ Emphasize off-campus visit to let students understand the current situations of engineering equipment and management
on the merchant ship practically.
Ÿ The Alumni Association and Kaohsiung Marine Engineering Association are composed of graduates from the
department, and the organizations are developing rapidly, which the alumni are including senior executives and
distinguished employers from various areas, providing a solid backing for graduates of the department.
