or our theatre interior we used a real barn on a real farm in the Isle of Man. When we first saw it, it was full of agricultural equipment and it stank. We
had a lot of actors involved in those scenes. To cover all their reactions - not to mention the fact Burt found Shakespeare quite difficult to retain - we needed a lot of coverage.
We were shooting for 10 days there and the only way I could see to get through the schedule was to shoot 360 degrees with two cameras.
We sourced a company that pro- vided old-fashioned theatre lighting and we fixed them up above the stage and audience area on our own lighting rig. Plus we also had lamps on stands littered around. I also hung little individual bulbs, and then lit the upstairs with fluorescent lamps which were aged down and hung on chains, I brought in perhaps a little fill light but generally used all practicals. All the little bits of tung- sten I had dotted about, comple- mented by ETERNA 250D, gave a nice rich warmth to the background.
