OUTPOSTNOWONRELEASE
P Gavin Struthers on Outpost, Ddirected by Steve Barker and
starring Ray Stevenson, Ju- lian Wadham, Richard Brake and Johnny Meres, a super-
natural horror story about the Nazi undead confronting a team of mercenaries in civil war-ravaged Eastern Europe. The soldiers re- alise just what they’re up against when they discover some grainy, black-and-white historical footage stored away in a bunker.
“The black-and-white footage was done for the film. I shot it on ETERNA 500T under exposed by 2 stops and pushed processed in the lab. This gave it a real grainy, high contrast feel.
“The effects for that sequence were done in three stages. First, I flashed the footage with a maglite through the viewfinder whilst shooting, which causes the bleach outs and general lift in some areas.
“Second, I flashed the film in the changing bag with a maglite so
ailed as “the best fighting Hgame babe” in video games,
high-kicking heroine Chun-Li finally takes centre stage in 20th Century Fox’s live ac-
tion adventure, Street Fighter – The Legend Of Chun-Li.
Being shot on Fujifilm by Brit cinematographer Geoff Boyle FBKS, pictured left, (The Mutant Chronicles) on location in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Vancouver, the movie stars Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk in the title role.
I could get the ‘sprocket hole bleed’. Thirdly, hairs, dirt and vi- gnette were added in post as this was meant to be a projected image in the bunker. The animated parts then had to be graded to match so we isolated the grain structure from the real footage and added it.
“The brief shots of the projec- tor in the room projecting the film were also three plates. First, the room was as lit in the film with the projector turning but the projec- tor lamp off.
“Second, we had the room with total black out and a lamp under the projector on a flicker through smoke to get the ‘beam plate. Finally, we inserted 16mm footage on the screen. This shoot was cheap and fast so much of the above was done by me in my lunch hours!”
