But it was the story of its aftermath, the reconstruction of the country and the sectarian violence that finally sparked writer Peter Bowker (Blackpool, Desperate Romantics) into action.
Directed by Nick Murphy, the three-parter stars James Nesbitt, Stephen Graham and Warren Brown as former Army colleagues who lives are irrevocably changed by the conflict.
According to producer Derek Wax: “I felt the glossy mini-series approach was wrong for Pete’s writing; we didn’t need perfectly composed shots with light reflected in puddles. We needed something truer, rougher and more rooted in reality.”
After persuading Murphy, an experienced documentarist, to go with film rather than HD, David Odd BSC found himself shooting Manchester scenes in Belfast - an architectural lookalike. Belfast also stood in many of the interior Basra scenes, while the outskirts of Marrakech in Morocco doubled for the war-torn streets of the Iraq city.
Occupation, which aired on BBC One earlier this year and is now available on DVD, was originated on 16mm Fujicolor ETERNA 250D 8663 and ETERNA Vivid 160T 8643
