ANNUAL OPERATORS’ NIGHT
This year’s BSC Best Cinematography Award, announced at the Annual Operators’ Night, went to Roger Deakins BSC, ASC for The Coens’ O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The other nominees were Roger Pratt BSC (Chocolat), Peter Pau (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Robert Fraisse (Enemy At The Gates) and Steven Soderbergh (Traffic)
Deakins, unable to be present at the Pinewood event on December 7 attended by over 234 members and guests, sent a message: “The BSC award, coming as it does from my friends and colleagues in Britain, means a great deal to me and I am extremely grateful to the Society – and a little surprised too! Although I have been living in the US for
over 10 years now, I am still very much a Brit.”
Guest of honour was British direc- tor Richard Loncraine and the recipi- ent of a Lifetime Achievement Award was 87-year old Gilbert Taylor BSC (The Omen, Star Wars, Dr. Strangelove).
The new Charles Staffell Award, which has been donated by Kevin Francis, was won by BSC Board mem- ber Roy Field for exemplary work in the field of Optical Effects.
The John Alcott Memorial (Arri) Award went to Mick Mason and was presented by Tommy Moran of Arri.

WEDDING BELLS
Because of his ill health, the Bert Easey Technical Award had been awarded earlier in the year to Harry Baker for the continuous development of fluid heads. Baker died recently.
The GBCT Operator’s Award went to Martin Hume and Martin Kenzie for their work on the TV series Band of Brothers while the Focus Award went to Danny Shelmerdine.
The raffle and auction helped raise £4,000 for the Great Ormond Street Hospital and Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund. ■
