                                   VARIETY CLUB
The Variety Club rightly prides itself on being the world’s greatest children’s charity, so who could refuse an invi- tation from Bob Hoskins to join stars and leading industry fig- ures for the 45th Variety Club Annual Dinner and Dance at the Grosvenor House? After a spectacu- lar floor show, guests danced the night away and there was even breakfast laid on for the early hours crowd. All agreed that the evening was made even more special know- ing that all proceeds were going to the Club’s Children’s Hospital. As Bob so eloquently put it: “It’s good to give!” ■

Judged to be one of the very best writing schemes,
TAPS now
in its fourth
season pro- motes new writers
for television through a unique programme of live studio showcases, retrospective screenings, national roadshows and the
TAPS Writer of the Year Award, held at and supported by, BAFTA London. Open to all British writers with
less than 2 hours of television cred- its, the showcase performances also offer training opportunities for Artists, Directors and Production staff. Now supported by Fujifilm for a second season, TAPS has been extremely successful in the finding and promotion of new talent, result- ing in credits on East Enders, The Bill, London Bridge, Taggart, Peak Practice, This Life, Byker Grove and Casualty.
TAPS Writer of the Year Award winner in 1996 was NFTS student Jo Hodges, whose winning work Redhead starred Angela Griffin from Coronation Street. Thanks to the close relationship with Fujifilm, TAPS is cross promoting Fujifilm Scholarship winning writers at its national roadshows, and the financial support is enabling TAPS to go from strength to strength in promoting the next generation of talented writers.
TAPS is a registered charity. ■
