PITCH & RUN
PITCH & RUN
WITH RICHARD ‘HOLE IN ONE’ PUN
Late last year at my favourite 19th hole, waters and the rest of the ITV network was then have their sales outfits in town. In those early
invited to join the week-long golf break.
All of the national ITV companies take it in turns to host the event at such courses as Troon, County Down, Turnberry, The Belfry, Carnoustie, North Berwick, Scarborough, Southport and St Mellion. Since 1992, the event has been organised by the Natural Break Committee, whose present
chairman is Sir Brian Bailey.
I do hope to see some of you there this year.
Last year I missed it for the first time in 11 years because I was stuck in a large Aussie bunker bet- ter known as Alice Springs. For more info, contact Ken Thornton or Colin Robbins on 01322 338750.
our Rachel Baker broke to me the excit- ing news about Exposure. After sinking several long “cold teas” in one, I agreed to do a column on golf. In the cold light of the following day, I tried to get myself
out of the hole into which I’d just dropped - and I stood as much chance of that as I did of hitting a par five in one with my sand wedge.
After being strictly shackled to my promise that I wouldn’t turn my column into an endless reminiscence of whisky-swilling golfing events, interspersed with sexist comments and corny jokes, I really have very little to tell you in this first edition. So instead, I thought I’d let you know about some of the golfing events which are due to take place for broadcasters in the coming year.
The best, by a long shot, promises to be the ITV Natural Break. This takes place at Belton Woods in Grantham from May 26-30. Those of you who attended in 1995 may remember that chaos ensued because the second course was in the midst of moving greens, fair-
ways and bunkers to prepare
for some major European tour-
nament being held later that
year. I can reliably inform you
that both courses are in now in
really good shape.
For those of you who don’t know about this particular event, it first teed off in 1963 as an annu- al for the golfers and anglers of Ulster Television and Scottish TV. Seven years on, the anglers decid- ed to cast their nets on other
days the event was usually hosted by LWT but, of late, the winning company agrees to host and organise the following year.
Last year, the Channel 4 golf society - one of my pet teams - won, marking its first triumph in any of the notable ITV golf events. Belated con- gratulations! To quote their captain: “The eagle has landed, but whether it will take off again is another matter.” More info from Bob Clarke on 01372 470058 (home) or 0171 306 8654 (office).
I
do my best. Every letter printed will earn the sender a QuickSnap flash camera and the best letter will earn the correspondent an invitation to a society golf day. ■ RICHARD PUN
