 OPENINGDECEMBER THEDESCENTPART2
he look on The Descent was all Tabout complete darkness,”
explains DP Sam McCurdy. “We lit what the girls saw only by what they took with them –
torches, helmet headlights, matches and flares.
“For the sequel, we went more technical because of the equipment the rescue team uses – hi-tech variations on torches, thermal imaging gear and so on. We boosted that kit with hidden battery packs so the actors could physically
light themselves.
“The journey starts with everyone having illumination devices. By the end, we’re left with one dimming torch and natural water reflections. My challenge was to ensure the audience enjoys the cave spectacle while keeping it dark enough so things can leap out of the shadows.
“The Crawlers were shot with different shutter angles so they move more rapidly, and look more vicious and scary. We used a lot more wirework for the Crawlers,
Simon Bowles designed some amazing ledges and crags they could leap off.”
The Descent: Part 2, opening in the UK on December 4, was originated on 35mm Fujicolor ETERNA 500T 8573 and ETERNA 250T 8553
