Residents in the 1950s and 1960s
Peggy J. Hutchinson - The Longest Resident of Mitre House
In the late 1950’s Peggy Hutchinson moved into Flat 9, re- maining until 2004, having worked for the Foreign Office in various postings most notably Paris, France
Dr Flora Bazant - Dentist moved into Flat 3. Born in June 1934, her husband Jack Bazant was also fully employed in the medical profession in central London.
Commander John Atkinson & his wife, Daphne Atkinson
Residents of Flat 8.
John Atkinson was a military man.
Ian Walter Fairclough Company Director
In the mid 1960’s Ian Walter Fairclough moved into Flat 5. Born in 1938 he eventually left London to manage Merrow Farm in Petworth,West Sussex as well as becoming Managing Agent for the well known Ethos Candles.
Eddie Hsia
Taiwanese Consul & News Editor
In the late 1960’s Eddie Hsia moved into Flat 3. He represented Taiwan as well as publishing a Chinese newspaper in Paris. He was a great bon viveur, womaniser and fantastic company and was greatly missed when relocating in 1998 as he knew everybody of any importance or influence almost everywhere world-wide.
Esther Milles-Lade - the widow of the Honourable Henry Augustus Milles
Ian Walter Fairclough was followed at Flat 5, by Esther Milles-Lade, formerly known as Esther Benyon and the daughter of Colonel Joseph Spencer Benyon.
On 24 April 1912 in London she married the Honourable Henry Augustus Milles who had served as a Lieutenant in the 33rd (East Kent) Company, 11th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry and fought for his country in the Boer War. In 1937 he left effects of £95,151 pounds, 7 shillings and 4 pennies.
Esther Milles-Lade lived at Flat 5, Mitre House until the early 1970’s.
Dorothy Sabine - widow of a Pub Landlord
In the mid 1960’s Dorothy Sabine became the resident owner of Flat 1, Mitre House.
Previously known as Dorothy Hill, she married pub landlord Floyd Sabine in Chelsea in 1957. During the Second World War, Floyd Sabine had been the landlord of the Moore Arms at 61 & 62 Cadogan Street in Chelsea.
Prior to this he ran the Duke ofYork Public House at 29 Gloucester Street in Clerkenwell.
Dorothy Sabine continued her residency at Mitre House, along with her second husband Javier Gutierrez Francisco, the first class chef at Motcombs Restaurant, until 1999.
Dorothy Sabine, Javier Gutierrez Francisco, Eddie Hsia, Rebecca Morgan,Allison Price, Caroline Connor-Johnstone, Dino Lenny and Peggy Hutchinson are still fondly remembered by some residents still in situ at Mitre House as all were good neighbours and good friends, some for decades and are all missed but not forgotten.
