Dear Paul,
You win. I'm exhausted.
You blow me away with your energy and enthusiasm, please tell me what
you're on, as I want some too!!! Not too mention how affable is your
sense of humour, even though I must admit I am completely overwhelmed by
your choices and options and don't really know when to take you
seriously or not.......!
Having said that, not only are you a persistent salesmen, you are also a
dedicated neighbour who clearly has all our interests at heart and I
appreciate it so much. I can only empathise with your 40+ years battle
with KFH, having had a frustrating skirmish or two just in my short time
in the building... how liberating to be free of the whole lot and
finally be able to get down to business and do some lovely
refurbishments.
You rightly point out that we can't pretend to have a grand building -
it is what it is. To try and be pretentious would be completely out of
place, so you have my vote to go for a chelsea arts club look in a
lovely boutique hotel way and keep/add to the very few attractive are
deco features in the building. I also agree completely in warming up the
building as much as possible. A few points I would like to add:
1) Please, please please be consistent with the brasswork on the doors,
windows (how wonderful also on the stair rail - great idea!), elevator
etc. and don't mix it with chrome as the result would be a horrible
hodgepodge in my opinion. Did you say the external intercom box outside
would also be brass plated?! (are we going to also replace the plastic
white intercom phones in the flats?!
2) I give you my full support on practically everything but please
please please when warming up/softening up the building, the stair
runners will prove essential, acoustically to absorb the sounds and also
to cover the unattractive concrete floor. I would go for a fairly
inexpensive clean and then put the carpet runners (do you have a quote
for these? I'm sure the hardwearing kind is not that expensive. I quite
like the 3-striped borders you suggest which reflect the floor.... I
would add the border stripes to the pattern on carpet H which is a
brownish colour which goes with the new paintwork and wooden table
(gold framed mirror) it would look lovely and also be great at hiding
dirt. If we could just get rid of the warehouse sound which renders the
building so so cheap. Is there anyway to reduce the elevator noise so we
don't have to have notices to not use it after a certain hour like
normal buildings?! Perhaps the carpet could start literally after a few
steps in the entry corridor, right where the bulletin board is. so it
would be matting.... a few steps of concrete/tiling then carpet in the
landing area and continue up the stairs...... that way the most
frequented part would be concrete.... I guess we would need to invest in
a Hoover but that's no big deal.
3) paint colours : I quite like a warm yellow main part of the walls
with orange to replace the green. I think fun replica artwork of that
period is a great idea.
4) If going the art deco way, the lighting should also be in that style,
so I would imagine similar to what we have..... the ones with the
