A MIGHTY HEART
FilmedinIndia, Pakistan and France last year, A Mighty Heart tells the story of the abduction and murder in 2002 of Wall Street Journal South Asia Bureau chief Daniel Pearl
Pearlwasresearchingastoryon the shoe bomber Richard Reid when he was snatched in Karachi leaving his wife Mariane to lead efforts to find
him and his killer(s).
Six months pregnant when the
ordeal began, she eventually wrote a book to try and introduce her son to the father he’d never meet.
Angelina Jolie, as Mariane, and Dan Futterman, as Daniel, lead an international cast including Archie Panjabi, Irfan Khan, Denis O’Hare, Adnan Siddique and Gary Wilmes.
For A Mighty Heart, director Michael Winterbottom, following recent award-winning films like
In This World and The Road To Guantanamo, is re-united with regular crew like production designer Mark Digby and DP Marcel Zyskind.
Filming in all locations proceeded in typical Winterbottom style: Zyskind, who has now worked on eight films with Winterbottom – completing Genova since A Mighty Heart – operated a hand-held DV camera.
There were no rehearsals and no master shots or attendant series of close-ups. Most takes ran the full length of a scene, and scenes were shot in sequence. Winterbottom didn’t call action or tell anyone where the camera would be.
That was decided in the moment sometimes with the director gripping the back of Zyskind’s shirt to steer him. Natural light was used whenever possible to allow actors and camera freedom of movement. ■
Some flashback scenes were shot on film using 35mm ETERNA 250D 8563. A Mighty Heart is on release in the UK from September 21
